The Mayan calendar prophecy predicts the end of the world as we know it. On December 21, 2012, an Earth changing event will take place. Those that believe in this prophecy fall into two camps.

There are those that believe that the end of the world is a catastrophic physical event. There are those that believe the world will continue on, but there will be a change in our consciousness.

Worldwide Catastrophe

The believers of worldwide catastrophe predict several scenarios here are three:

A mysterious Planet X will pass close to the earth and create havoc with the earth’s crust destroying most of the living creatures.
On that date, our Sun will align itself with the center of the galaxy. That alignment will generate unknown forces that will affect the earth’s magnetic field, destroying life.
Unusually high solar flare activity is forecast for that time frame. That solar activity could substantially affect the earth’s magnetic shield and fundamentally have a dramatic effect on life.
Most scientists find these scenarios to be untenable, that is, not provable or valid. Bob Berman a columnist at Astronomy magazine wrote, “…the fun begins, as people come up with exquisitely moronic astrobabble in an attempt to find something celestial that might happen…”
There are some scientists that do not go so far as to entirely discount the Mayan end of the world prophecy. Dr. Bartels, a noted anthropologist and astronomer, claims there may be more to this prediction than has been acknowledged by science and the media.

New Age Consciousness

There are those end-of-world believers that see this prediction not as a physical event, but as a rebirth, an awakening. They have a different view of the causes for this new consciousness.

The Sun’s alignment with the center of the galaxy will emit energy fields that envelope the Earth exposing mankind to an awakening of his true self.
Ancient religions and civilizations have for eons foretold of man’s coming to a new age.
During this period we are entering the Age of Aquarius, the astrological age of enlightenment.
Undoubtedly, much is unknown to man. Although we attempt to discover and uncover Nature’s truths through the discipline of science, Man must continue to cope with the unexplained and the mysterious.
With all of our technology and science, we still cannot explain the mystery of life. The Mayan 2012 prophecy and all its offshoots are one of those mysteries.

This short article pays little justice to the pros and cons of this fascinating subject. Learn more about the Mayan calendar and the 2012 prophecy.

Decide for yourself. Is 2012 the end of the world []? Prepare for the possibilities. Why not be prepared and arm yourself with knowledge?
